This class is specially designed for people who are interested in the 12-week Creative Workspace class at Northwind Art School, and who want to check it out before committing to the full experience! You’ll get a taste of the types of exercises you’ll do and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Creative Workspace is part art-making class, part creative project accountability group, and is for artists and aspiring artists of all disciplines. This is not a technique class, but more so a class on what lights your fire. Join artist Jenna Bean Veatch in the classroom monthly October through January, and in between, to keep the momentum going and to stay engaged with your art and with your classmates, you’ll post weekly assignments online. It’ll all culminate in an art show of student work.

Jenna Bean Veatch is a multi-disciplinary performing artist and teacher who has been accused of creating “pure, unadulterated, heart-stopping whimsy.” She makes dance-theater shows, stop-action animation, music, written pieces, and delightful objects.

This is a fabulous fall day immersed in flowers and art-making. Flower farmer Emmy Gran teaches you naturalistic floral design; then artist Suzanne Lamon guides you in creating a still life of your flower arrangement. These two teaching artists lead a workshop celebrating autumn and the beauty of the natural world!

Northwind Art School hosts an afternoon of collaborative painting in pairs! Come with your spouse, a friend, a sibling or a sweetheart, and create a singular abstract painting together. Invite whoever you feel like connecting with through art to join you in an art date. It’s a chance to let go of expectations and have fun with spontaneous, creative play. Teaching artist Neha Panicker of Seattle will be your guide as you find out what expressive abstract painting is. Then you will use a variety of unusual tools for painting and for mark making. The atmosphere of this workshop will be creatively charged and energetic!

Surprise yourself and each other, get to know each other better, build confidence, and by the end of the session you’ll have a joint abstract painting you created together.

Zines — small folded and stapled books — are infinitely accessible, often weird, often radical, often innovative, hyper-localized works of art. Both gutter and mountaintop, zines are a great way to play in print, try out ideas, and build community.

In this class, winter texts publisher Conner Bouchard-Roberts will guide you from idea to physical form, going over techniques, theories and the necessity of playful collaboration. You will learn everything you need to bring your zine/print dreams to fruition. Bring your wildest ideas!

This workshop will have three Monday evening sessions. Oct. 9 will start with cultivation of ideas and gathering inspirations; Oct. 16 will delve into curation, writing, and designing, and Oct. 23 will be all about creation, printing, assembly and celebration.

Each participant will take home 20 copies of their own zine, a copy of each of their classmates’ zines, and a Riso printed cover for their zine (if desired).
