This lecture on Paintings Conservation offers an intimate view of the problems and solutions of restoring an old master painting. Elisabeth will give an overview of the profession, with a focus on the Getty Museum’s conservation studio, and then delve into the treatment of a painting by Orazio Gentileschi owned by the National Museum of Art in Bucharest, Romania that came to the Getty after having been severely damaged in their revolution in 1989. Participants will learn about the materials and techniques employed in professional conservation studios and will come away with an understanding of the structure and materials used in European easel paintings. Gentileschi’s painting and its treatment were the subject of a special exhibition at the Getty, and of a Los Angeles Times article. Additionally it was the subject of numerous professional lectures that I presented in the USA and Romania. There will be time after the presentation for Q & A!
