Event Details

The Goddard College MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts Program will receive a visit from the sbəq̓ʷaʔgʷiaAbš Blue Heron Canoe Family at the March residency at Fort Worden. An event that is free and open to the public will occur at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding on Sunday, March 22, 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

Michael Evans, Chair of the Snohomish Tribe of Indians and Father of the Blue Heron Family Canoe built the extra-wide canoe with his father, and it has carried them on many annual Tribal Canoe Journeys. Michael is especially committed to passing on the teachings of the canoe to their youth. The Blue Heron Canoe was featured in an ad for Alaska Airlines, and has made appearances in festivals in Seattle and the surrounding region. Karen Condos, President of Natives United in Journey will accompany Michael on this journey, and she will offer a workshop in Native Gift Making. She says, “Natives Unite in Journey developed to assist Native American Youth in education through a ‘hands on approach’. The annual Pacific Northwest Tribal Canoe Journey was instrumental to teach our youth that family, fun, and pride can make a difference.”

Michael and Karen will arrive on Friday, March 20th at Fort Worden where the canoe will be staged at between Building 204 and the Commons from noon on Friday, March 20th until the morning of Sunday, March 22.

The Canoe will then travel to Port Hadlock on Sunday, March 22, to the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, 42 N. Water St. Port Hadlock, WA 98339. Michael will offer a presentation about the canoe at 1:30 pm, then Karen will give the Native Gift Making workshop. From 1:00 – 3:00 pm, the event is open to the public.
