FRIDAYS, JANUARY 10, 17, 24, 31, 1-4 PM

I’ve been approached by many folks who say they would like to learn how to paint in oils, but are stymied by the cost of materials, worry about toxicity and are intimidated by “how much there is to learn”.

This is a class for absolute beginners who want to take the leap. Materials will be provided so you don’t have to sink $300-$400 at the outset. In this class we will be working absolutely non-toxically. The first session will discuss pigments and mediums (toxic and otherwise), how to lay out your palette, the different styles of brushes and palette knives, what kind of marks they make, and how to clean them non-toxically. Different painting surfaces will be discussed, priming with gesso and how to tone your painting surface. (We will be working on supplied canvas panels). The subsequent three sessions will be devoted to working on your own paintings. Subject matter will be provided. One, two or even three paintings could be completed depending on the speed of the painter.

Materials fee: $30 (cash or check, payable to Chris Witkowski at the start of the first class.
